So here, out of a place that is fuelled by pure desperation, I give you an adventure circa 2003 in the Japanese countryside which includes a mummy and a kappa:
to cut a long story short about today: we went looking for a kappa mummy.
A kappa is a Japanese mythological character who has a bowl of water on his head and he rips peoples livers out and eats them. well, that's all the information I can remember about them and im sure if kappas were real they would've done that. So....my friend heard that they had a Kappa mummy a few towns down -> we went off to see if they did.
We found the temple but apparently it was locked up secretly in the back room. Besides not just anyone can see it. Also, apparently, its only a hand. So more than likely (if it is a hand) its probably the hand of a small person/dwarf/child. Not a kappa. but try telling Chand that.
This is what they had on display:

It was kinda spooky at the time.
I am also obsessed with thinking about how spooky Aokigahara Forest is (link here but seriously dudes, it has pictures of dead peoples so don't click on that link if you don't like being spooked out of your pants and into the next persons pants*).
SPOOKY!
* not as sexy as I make it sound

Japanese horror stories and movies freak me out more than any other. Movies like Hostel and Saw gross me out but once they've finished, whatever, I move on. Slasher movies? No problem. But the Ring and the Grudge? NIGHTMARES FOR MONTHS ON END! What the fuck is the deal with the long-neck woman?! One of my students once told me he'd had a photo taken of him on the edge of a cliff, and when it was printed, there was a long neck woman's head about a foot above his. That creeped me out for aaaages afterwards ... hell it's creeping me out now just thinking about it!
Is Aokigahara Forest the one at the bottom of Fuji?? Some American ghostbuster guy did a segment on it, and I sat through the first minute of footage before turning it off (I'm going to heed your warning and not click that link).
The Japanese. They do terror better than anyone else.
Oh that is creepy (about the photo!). I've heard so many things like that - although I've forgotten most of them now.. haha. Loved hearing about people who saw UFOs and ghosts etc.
I remember looking more into the story of the Ring after I first saw it and read that Samara could get to someone via any reflective surface (that's why someone who was a motorbike rider got killed, as she came out if his helmet as he was riding). For ages I was scared of reflective surfaces... haha. Oh no, I'm kind of spooking myself again.
Dont know why I said Samara because that's from the US version. I obviously meant Sadako.
Far out, that link is super creepy! And so sad too. There was a photo I was stuck on, I couldn't quite figure it out as it looked like a hairdryer or crimper ... eugh, don't want to think about it!
I have to ask my sister-in-law about kappa, she is from the town the story originated from. I don't know much about them asides from the disemboweling aspect.
btw... for those who don't know, the character Sandy from "Monkey" is a Kappa.
omg, i never liked monkey, sorry
I was watching ring 2 alone in my old place.
The first time sadako came on the screen my cell rang, only 3 times and then stopped.
It was exactly at 9pm, ku (9) is kind of a scary number in Japan.
The call was also from an unknown number.
I screamed and turned it off straight away!!!!
Eloise
eeeew! Rather you than me there - I'm a scaredy cat!
I think you're very interesting btw! :)
